Silver Pendants support jewelry designers all over the world. As designers we share similar joys and challenges. Carmen Rosa Gamio Alvarez is a jeweler in Peru who recently received a microloan from Nina Designs. Reading her bio, I was struck by how much all of us have in common as jewelry designers, business women and moms.
Alvarez discovered her love of art early. When I was a little girl, I liked to draw, and today I have a lot of fun designing and creating jewelry. I think it awoke the latent child artist in me.
She adores her job. The silversmiths art runs through my veins and I love itFor me, my art is a fusion of fantasy and reality.
She struggles with the high price of silver. The rising price of silver is seriously affecting my work.
And she relishes being a Mom.

This week’s episode was The Wizard of Oz. The show began with Kenneth Cole’s noir directive for Holiday 2011 — clearly a nod to the personal style of Wicked Witch of East. It was black, black, and more black: black dresses (didn’t we already have the LBD challenge…?), black pants, black faux fur, and black jackets. The accessories had to perform their magic against, and at the same time not monkey around with the Kenneth Cole clothes provided to the designers.
Tin-Man Brian showed his lack of heart while making his handbag, the sculptural horn handle of which required so much drilling and sanding that the workroom was like the poppy field, making people ill with flying resin particles and generally shifting the mood to one of lethargy and much pique. Then there was our lion-hearted Adrian who was trying with all his might to tame his wild design nature and find a gentler approach. Diego, our man of straw, seemed to hav

Your honey went to all the trouble of choosing an absolutely gorgeous rock for you to flash on your third finger, but if your cuticles are thrashed, your nail polish is chipped, and you’ve neglected to use lotion for the past week (leaving your hands drier than the Sahara desert) you may not be too keen to show of your hands or your band. So if you’re just dying to waggle that finger in the face of anyone interested enough to look, here are just a few good ways to treat your manual woes and get your hands in presentable condition.
1. Dry skin. Even if you’re rushed in the morning, take a minute to apply some moisturizer to your hands. Immediately after a shower is the best time since your pores are open and ready to absorb moisture and lock it in. Look for a thick, creamy lotion (like Jergen’s Shea Butter Lotion) that will leave your skin soft and smooth.
2. Yucky nails. Even if you’re not a nail-biter you can end up with some pretty mangled claws if you don’t pay attention. You should
